It’s a story he tells often. It beats him up every time. The last time he saw Joe Nuxhall was three days before Joe died. They’d been “won” in a charity auction, and were playing golf.
Actually, Marty was playing golf. Joe was so weak, he hit only a few shots. Being Joe, he honored the commitment and filled the day telling stories. And then he said this, sitting in a golf cart on an unusually beautiful November day:
“We really had a good time, didn’t we?”
Brennaman was taken aback, until he knew what Nuxhall meant. Really knew. Joe was saying goodbye.
“Yeah,” Marty managed, “we really did.”
