Earlier this week Leafs captain Mats Sundin found out he would not need surgery to repair one of his hips, which had been bothering him throughout the season. This morning, TSN and Stockholm based newspaper Expressen are reporting that Sundin’s former team, Djurgarden IF, is offering one million dollars for one year of service.
At 36 years of age, this may be a harder decision for Sundin than it appears. Despite being a pay cut of $6.6 million, Sundin could spend the final years of his career playing in his home country, near his family, and there’s no telling how much that may mean to him. On the other hand, he has spent his entire NHL career in Toronto, and that city probably means a lot to him as well. Currently, Sundin has a club option for next season remaining on his contract with the Leafs, and the word out of Toronto is both sides want to work on a two-year extension. At 36, it’s hard to believe any new deal would be worth the $7.6 million he received this season, but his production hasn’t slowed and he is the heart and soul of the team. Toronto surely won’t low ball him, but it will be interesting to see how things work out and how alluring (or not) it is for Sundin to finish his career in Sweden. |
