As something that probably isn’t even deserving of its own post, the Ottawa Senators will not be bringing back impending UFA defenceman Matt Gilroy next season.
According to Bruce Garrioch, sources say the Senators have already informed defenceman Matt Gilroy he won’t be back. Dealt here at the deadline from Tampa, it didn’t work out for either side and he will move on.
I would like to think that it especially didn’t work out for Gilroy since he’ll hit unrestricted free agency on July 1st and because of his ineffectual play with the Lightning and Senators last season, he should have a difficult time finding an organization willing to give him a one-way contract. At least here in Ottawa, the fans and the organization will be fine moving forward; whereas Gilroy will infamously go down in Senators lore as the guy who actually made fans yearn for Brian Lee.
This year, I made the point that Gilroy is a dead ringer for Nicolas Cage. Hopefully the defenceman doesn’t follow Cage’s career path and leap at any offer that comes his way – otherwise, he may end up making a Season of the Witch-like decision and accept a deal to join the Maccabi Metulla Eggenbreggers.
