Never count out Matthew Stafford and the Detroit Lions.
Stafford threw another late touchdown pass on Sunday, giving Detroit a dramatic, 20-17 win over the Washington Redskins—and providing the Lions their third straight come-from-behind victory at Ford Field.
The Lions are the undisputed comeback kings of the NFL.
According to ESPN Stats and Information, the Lions are just the fifth team in NFL history to overcome a fourth quarter deficit and win in three consecutive home games, joining the Frankford Yellow Jackets (1926), Buffalo Bills (1990), Indianapolis Colts (2009) and Arizona Cardinals (2011).
Detroit is 4-3, and Stafford—who now has 24 comeback wins in his first 100 career starts—is starting to get MVP hype.
Three weeks ago, the Lions forced a fumble and kicked a late field goal to beat the previously unbeaten Philadelphia Eagles. The very next week, Stafford threw a game-tying touchdown pass and then led the Lions for a game-winning field goal with 1:29 left against the Los Angeles Rams.
A third straight win didn’t look likely for the Lions on Sunday, especially after Kirk Cousins ran in a go-ahead touchdown with 1:05 left in the fourth quarter. Detroit needed to go 75 yards in just 65 seconds, but Stafford once again delivered.
Completions of 23 yards to Marvin Jones and 20 to Andre Roberts sandwiched a 14-yard Stafford scramble. On 3rd-and-10 from the 18-yard line, Stafford hit veteran Anquan Boldin for the game-winning score with 16 seconds left.
Over the last three games, Stafford has eight touchdown passes and zero interceptions.
“I expect to win every time I get the ball,” Stafford said, via ESPN. “It’s not always going to happen that way. You know, Tennessee, we had a chance and I didn’t make a play to win. But I expect to go out there and win. I believe in the guys that I’ve got in the huddle with me.
