While dreams of big-name pitchers dance in our heads, the reality is that Doug Melvin & Co. will likely have to turn to a reclamation project or two if they’re planning to improve the starting rotation. Mark Mulder was a name that was mentioned awhile ago, and when the Brewers hired his former Oakland pitching coach, Rick Peterson, the rumors only intensified.
Among Adam McCalvy’s reports today at his MLB.com blog is an update on the Mulder situation. McCalvy notes that Melvin finally heard back from Mulder’s agent earlier this week, but details are scarce when it comes to the topic of conversation.
So we don’t know if the Brewers are any closer to adding Mulder to the fold. What we do know is that there doesn’t seem to be many other teams interested in the right-hander, and that it probably wouldn’t cost the Brewers much to see what Mulder has left. Ideally a minor league contract would do the trick, but if the Brewers have to guarantee a small amount of money to him in order to see how he fares in spring training, it may be worth the risk.
At the very least, he shouldn’t be any worse than Braden Looper was in 2009, assuming he can piece together a mostly-healthy season.
