In blinding white snow and in front of a packed house at the Linc, the Eagles defeated the Detroit Lions in one of the most bizarre games of the Philadelphia Eagles storied history. Around 1 pm is when the snow was at its heaviest and it looked more like New England than Philly. The elements surely effected the game as in the first half the Lions had recorded five fumbles and two were grabbed by the Eagles. Things did not go so well for the Eagles on offense as well. The offense at one point only had a total of -2 yards of total offense. The team just had trouble getting into any kind of rhythm what so ever. A combination of good defense and just pure bad luck on the Lions behalf kept the game close going into half time.
The second half of this game was pure amazement if you were rooting for the Eagles. As the weather began to dissipate, the Eagles offense started tp annihilate the Lions defense. Lesean McCoy rushed for two fourth quarter touchdowns of 40 yards plus that gave the Eagles new signs of life. After a successful blocked punt by the Eagles special teams, momentum was truly on their side.
The Lions had one last gasp of breath though, they received the ball with about 8 minutes left in the game and as Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford called an audible, the center miss-read the snap count causing the ball to sail over Stafford’s head. The ball was recovered by line backer Mychal Kendricks who leads the league in fumble recoveries. The game was sealed when back up running back Chris Polk ran it in for touchdown on a 23 yard run. The Lions run defense looked horrid to say the least. After going 8 games without giving up a rushing touchdown they give up four in one game. Foles and Polk each rushed in and McCoy had a pair himself. No to mention on the defensive side of the ball the Eagles virtually shut down Calvin Johnson who had three catches for 49 yards.
Some key notes from today,s game , Lesean McCoy rushed for a career high and team high 217 yards , the most by a player since Hall of Fame running back Steve Van Buren in 1949. Also it was the first time the Eagles had a 200 yard rusher since 2000 when Duce Staley did it against the Dallas Cowboys, Lastly this was the first “snow game “at the Linc since 2005 in which the Seattle Seahawks defeated the Eagles 42-0.
