McGee signs extension

McGee signs extension

The Buffalo Bills have seen three starting cornerbacks leave town via free agency in the last five years. They made sure it wouldn’t happen a fourth time by signing Terrence McGee to a contract extension Friday. The team did not release details, but an NFL source said McGee received a four-year deal worth $27 million in new money. The extension means he’ll be with the Bills through 2013.

Mind of Joe
Shock, utter shock. I’m more shocked now, than the Bills putting up a fight against New England on Monday. Forget the Bills losing 3 corners over the last 5 years, Nate Oddoms and Thomas Smith are rolling over in their graves. And to think he’s getting about 7 million a year, makes it even crazier. I’m kind of back and forth with the signing. The main reason I like it is because the Bills have their top 3 corners (McGee, McKelvin, and Corner) signed for the next 3-4 years. That means the Bills don’t have to waste a 1st round pick on a new corner as they have done in the past when losing a corner in FA.

However, I do think McGee is getting too much money for a 29 year-old corner back. I’d of rather have seen the Bills resigned either Winfield or Clements when those two were up for FA. Normally an extension like this would come after a player plays out his rookie deal. But McGee had signed a very moderate extension in 2005, only 3 years into his pro career. I’ve heard a lot of experts make the claim that if McGee played on a good pass rush defense he would be an all-pro. But I’m sure if I looked back at all-pro corners in the NFL over the past years, I’m sure I could find some who didn’t have a good pass rush at their exposure.

McGee, like all high paid athletes in Buffalo is going to have a big target on his back from the fans and the media. Before when McGee would get burned, fans would think, “well he’s our best corner and we are lucky to have him.” Now it’s going to be “Hey he’s paid to be a shut down corner.” With great power (scratch that)…with great money, comes great responsibility in the NFL. It’s time for McGee to try and shut down the best wides in the league, instead of having Randy Moss eat him alive.
