McGregor Favored Over Alvarez

Conor McGregor’s goal of becoming the first fighter to hold UFC belts in multiple weight classes simultaneously looks like a good bet.  At least according to people who put money on such things.

McGregor currently sits as a -140 favorite to beat Eddie Alvarez November 12th in New York City’s Madison Square Garden, and in the process becoming the UFC’s Featherweight and Lightweight Champion.  This only makes McGregor a slight favorite, however – he’s expected to win this fight 58% of the time.  And money has been coming in on current champ Alvarez since betting opened on this matchup – McGregor was originally a -185 (65%) favorite, so the smart money appears to like Alvarez’s chances at putting McGregor on his back for 25 minutes.

This will mark McGregor’s first fight at 155-pounds since New Years Eve 2012, when he captured the Cage Warriors Lightweight championship.  His last two fights were at welterweight against Nate Diaz, despite being the reigning UFC Featherweight Champion and never having defending his belt since winning it off of Jose Aldo.  Meanwhile, this will be current champ Eddie Alvarez’s first title defense since winning the belt from Rafael dos Anjos in July.  He also had two stints as the 155-pound champion for Bellator before signing with the UFC in 2014.
