Before I get started, let me pour you a nice big glass of Kool-Aid. I’ve had about 3 already, so get caught up lightweights. Today we’re going to overlook the fact that Joe Dumars put a little too much bourbon in his Kool-Aid (that’s normal, right?) on draft night. We’re here to simply celebrate the arrival of two new members to the Detroit Piston family: Greg Monroe and Terrico White. They’re really happy to be here.
Monroe, the Pistons’ first round pick, comes to us by way of Georgetown. As a Hoya, Monroe was heralded as an exceptional passer for a big man. He played mostly on the perimeter in John Thompson XVIII’s Princeton offense.
He may be the most offensively gifted big man in this draft, though many Piston fans (myself included) wanted DeMarcus “I’m a controversial mofo” Cousins instead. There are questions with Monroe’s rebounding ability and defensive intensity, but hopefully Ben Wallace can pull a Mr. Miyagi and mold Monroe into an ass-kicking machine.
One of the best things about Monroe? Apparently his nickname is “Moose.” I don’t know if that will catch on at the Palace, but we’ll see what Mason comes up with when the season begins.
Check after the jump for info on Terrico White…
Terrico White comes to the D from Mississippi, where he played two somewhat underwhelming seasons. However, Joe D must have liked the fact that the best PG in the draft not named John Wall was falling to him at pick #36, because he snatched White up right away.
Many ‘Stones fans are miffed about this pick because Detroit’s backcourt is already a pretty crowded place and there are glaring holes in the post. With Rodney Stuckey, Rip Hamilton, Ben Gordon, and Will Bynum already in the fold, it may be hard for White to crack the rotation until someone else is moved. Still, it’s hard to not get excited about a guy that can do this.
Dumars will either look like a genius or a moron with this pick, depending on how White develops. Hopefully both he and Monroe pan out and Joe D looks like the former all over again.
