Another day, another veteran quarterback who could emerge as a candidate to become the Tennessee Titans’ next starting signal-caller.
According to Chris Mortenson, veteran QB Carson Palmer, apparently distraught with the state of affairs in Cincy, will ask for a trade/release and threaten to retire if the Bengals refuse to accommodate him.
Should the Titans make a run at Palmer if he’s available? In my opinion, thanks to factors such as his recent performance and injury history, the Titans should pass on this potential starting QB option.
Why the Titans should say no to Palmer
As I mentioned in this piece’s opening paragraph, due to the downward spiral his career has experienced and ailments that have perhaps played a key role in his struggles in recent years, I’d be content if the Titans passed on the possibility to attain Carson Palmer.
Once given the “Aaron Rodgers’ treatment” as one of the game’s beloved up-and-coming gunslingers, injuries and inconsistency have prevented Palmer from reaching the ceiling of his vast potential. A gruesome knee injury in the 2005 playoffs and more recently, an elbow problem in 2008 have most likely contributed to Palmer’s struggles as of late.
He’s certainly still a capable quarterback, but his propensity for throwing INTs definitely should serve as a red flag to potential suitors. Since 2007, Palmer has averaged more than one INT per game, tossing 57 INTs in his last 52 starts.
Verdict
Sure, the change of scenery that Palmer’s looking for could do him wonders, but considering a slew of factors such as his injury history, the likely high price-tag associated with acquiring him and a performance that’s been declining over the course of a few years, color me not too enthused about the potential of the Titans being one of the teams in the running for Palmer’s services.
A few years ago, I’d be ecstatic if you told me that Carson Palmer was available. However, in 2011, due to the aforementioned injuries and inconsistency that has plagued his performance as of late, I’m hoping that the Titans will go in another direction in their search for a new starting quarterback.
