Memphis senior linebacker Tank Jakes appeared on Phil Steele’s second-team 2014 Midseason All-American list that was released on Friday morning, becoming the only player to represent the American Athletic Conference.
Jakes, who made the first team on our midseason All-AAC list earlier this week, has been the anchor on a stout Memphis defensive front seven. The 5-foot-11, 227-pound Alabama native leads the American in tackles for loss with 12.0 (4th in the NCAA), sacks (6.0), fumbles forced (4), and is No. 3 in solo tackles (36).
Despite the Tigers’ first 3-3 start since 2008 (and by far the best six-game stretch since he stepped on campus), Jakes isn’t satisfied with the way his team has performed this season.
“I feel good, but at the same time, I’d like to be 6-0,” Jakes said, according to 247Sports.com. “We’ve just got to make sure that we execute this week on the bye week, so that when we leave SMU, we are 4-3.”
Jakes was added to the Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List—which goes to college football’s Defensive Player of the Year—on Wednesday.
