Men's Hockey Position Preview: Goaltenders

With the hockey season officially starting on Friday, we will break down this year's team in a three part series. We will start with a brief look at the goalies.

Wisconsin turned to a pair of fresman netminders a season ago, and while there were growing pains, both Joel Rumpel and Landon Peterson showed signs of positive growth in the latter portions of the season. That experience will pay dividends during the 2012-13 season.

Joel Rumpel: Rumpel saw the bulk of the starts a season ago, posting a 12-12-2 record with a 2.48 goals against average. His .919 save percentage was good for fourth best in the WCHA. He wasn't really tested against the U.S. u-18 squad, but answered the bell when he had to. Expect to see Rumpel in net more often than not.

Landon Peterson: The sophomore from Oregon, Wis. appeared in 13 games, making 11 starts. He went 5-6 with a GAA of 3.01. He looked solid in the exhibtion game, collecting 14 saves en route to picking up the win. Peterson will likely pick up a few starts here and there and, if nothing else, will be able to push Rumpel in practice to stay on top of his game.

Adam Miller: It's hard to tell exactly where the newcomer to the group will fit in during his inagural season. The Illinois native served a brief stint with the Chicago Steel of the USHL, but spent the bulk of his time with the New Jersey Hitmen in the EJHL a season ago. For now, it looks as though Miller will have to wait his turn behind the two returners.
