Emperor David Stern got a bit sassy today with the egomaniacal Jim Rome. In his typical douchebag tone, Rome asked Stern if the lottery was rigged. Stern fired back:
DS: I have two answers for that. I’ll give you the easy one – No. And the statement – shame on you for asking.
JR: I understand why you would say that to me and I wanted to preface it by asking respectfully, but it’s my job to ask because people wonder.
DS: That’s ridiculous. But that’s okay.
JR: I don’t think the question is ridiculous because I know people think that.
DS: Have you stopped beating your wife yet?
JR: I don’t know if that’s fair.
I’m no fan of Rome, but props to him for asking. Lest anyone forget, the NBA adopted the lottery due to concerns teams were tanking to improve their draft positioning. So it’s okay for Stern and executives to doubt the ethics of teams’ front offices, but it’s not okay for the media to question the league’s ethics. Got it.
This isn’t the first time Stern has used the ‘wife beating’ analogy. SI’s Zach Lowe reminds us that the Commish dropped the line in 2007 during a press conference about disgraced official Tim Donaghy.
