TSN just posted a video of tonight’s edition of ‘Insider Trading’ on their website and to conclude the segment — beginning at the 3:14 mark of the video — Pierre Lebrun discusses Marc Methot’s situation and how it has changed in an effort to salvage the negotiations.
“Mike Liut, now running Marc Methot’s file and the plan is for Mike Liut and the Ottawa Senators to take another stab at this. We know talks didn’t go well before, but they’re going to try here one more time over the next couple of weeks to see if they can get an extension done. Obviously, if they can’t, we know what might happen before March 2nd – (Methot)’s a UFA at the end of the year and might get dealt.”
Liut now running Methot’s file can probably be attributed to some combination of factors. As Bruce Garrioch mentioned on Twitter today, contract talks have stalled.
There have been no recent contract talks between the #Sens and Marc Methot’s camp. Both sides want him to play more before talking.

It’s also no secret that Don Brennan’s article this past summer detailing the Methot camp’s contract demands and appeals to bridge the gap irked Senators management. Pierre Dorion had an impassioned interview on TSN 1200 the next day in which he accused Larry Kelly, Methot’s previous representative, of negotiating in bad faith through the media.
One would hope for the sake of future negotiations that the relationship between the organization and Kelly could overcome these strained times, but in this specific case, if the gap really is as small as Methot has made it out to be, I think it’s pretty comical that the organization would continue to nickel and dime some of its better players – especially when it routinely goes out of its way to make bad investments in players like Milan Michalek and David Legwand.
