With the announcement of the suspension of UConn Huskies starting quarterback Cody Endres yesterday, we were left to wonder who will handle the QB1 duties of the Huskies this Saturday against the Louisville Cardinals. Would it be redshirt freshman Michael Box who was No. 2 on the depth chart or would it be senior Zach Frazer who has more experience.
Well we can put all the speculation to bed as head coach Randy Edsall announced during his conference call with the local media that Box will be handling the quarterback duties on Saturday afternoon.
“I have complete confidence in Mike,” Edsall said. “Everything I do is based on what I think and my staff thinks who are the best people. We made that move before, and we feel Mike gives us the best opportunity to win. We have faith and confidence in him, he just doesn’t have a lot of experience.”
“We just have to make sure we do our part as coaches to get him into a rhythm and gain some confidence as we start the ballgame. He prepares well, as a No. 2 and even as a No. 3. I like his leadership, what he brings to the table as a quarterback, his demeanor and how he interacts with all the members of the offense and defense as well.”
Box has seen action in two games this year and is 2-for-5 for 30 yards passing.
As far as Endres goes, his time as a UConn football player is over.
“I told him,” Edsall said. “I mean he’s on track to graduate, and that’s what’s most important. But I told him I wouldn’t have him back here next year. And he made a comment he wasn’t planning to come back, so…”
You know Edsall is pissed at Endres right now. He layed it out on the line for him by giving him another chance and Endres repays him by getting suspended yet again. Maybe one day Endres will look back at the mistakes he made and wonder what could have been.
But now, what was expected to be a great season for the Huskies, could fall by the wayside because of Endres’ selfishness.
