Michael Carter-Williams (MCW) bursted onto the NBA scene this past week in dramatic and impressive fashion. The rookie 6’6 point guard out of University of Syracuse was expected to be a good NBA point guard but so far has surpassed every expectation which helped him become just the 2nd rookie in NBA history to start their career off with a Player Of the Week award.
MCW’s incredible week started off against the defending NBA Champions and the “Big Three” in the Miami Heat. The rookie scored his first NBA basket 14 seconds into the game with a steal that lead to his first career slam dunk. It would just get better for him as the game went on to finish with eight more steals including four more off the big man himself LeBron James. MCW’s debut is already being considered one of the greatest NBA debuts by a rookie ever and was being compared to Oscar Robertson NBA debut back in October 17th, 1964 when he recorded a triple-double in his debut. MCW would finish a steal away from being just the second player ever to accomplish the feat as he lead the 76ers to an upset win over the Miami Heat in a 114-110 76ers win. His nine steals set a 76ers franchise record and is also the most for any rookie in league history in their debut and second most assists in a NBA debut with 12 only following Ernie DiGregorio’s 14 assists in his 1973 NBA debut. The last player in NBA history to record 20 or more points with at lest five assists and five steals is LeBron James. The next test for MCW, the Washington Wizards. Against the Wizards, MCW started off shaky but found his composure after halftime. He then help lead a second half comeback and was able to finish with a final stat line of 14 points , five assists , three rebounds and one assist. In his third game, MCW outplayed former NBA MVP Derrick Rose and helped the 76ers cap a 20 point comeback in a 107-104 thriller and recorded his second career double-double.
MCW became only the second NBA rookie to ever start his career off with a Player of the Week Award following Shaquille O’Neal who accomplished the feat back in 1992-93. Through the first three games of the season, he’s averaging 21 points, nine assists , five rebounds and four steals per game.
