The Boos hit Michael Koenen as he finished punting some of the shortest punts of his career. Fans don’t understand, its Not Koenen failing at his job. You don’t all of a sudden forget how to punt.
The Bucs special teams are horrible, and there is a logical reason for it.
Who are your special teams players? They are your back ups. Your not going to put your starting Wide Receiver or starting tailback out on Special Teams.
What is it the Bucs are lacking the most right now? Quality Depth at almost every position. Its your depth that you use on Special Teams, and the Bucs simply don’t have any quality players on their coverage units, so Bucs special teams coach Kevin O’Dea is instructing Koenen to punt the ball as high as possible, or to punt end over end like a kickoff to help promote fumbles. As you see in the photo, thats how a punter gets real distance on his kicks.
Koenen gets a kick out of unknowledable fans…one guy yelled out “Now thats how you kick” when Falcons punter boomed a 50+ yarder. But what that fan didn’t realize was that kick out kicked its coverage, and Bucs return man brought it back for 50 yards the other way!
After Devin Hester burned the Bucs a couple weeks ago, the Bucs have been taking no chances and asking Koenen to kick as high as he can, and its hurting his averages, but Koenen takes it all in stride. More than happy to “Take one” for the team!
Speaking of Punt Returns..tomorrow’s Video Vault will have the Bucs first ever blocked punt, returned by Ricky Reynolds for a TD against the Redskins in 1989!
VERNER BACK!- CB Alteran Verner had a clear bill of health and should return this week.
