Courtesy Adam Rittenberg of ESPN.com’s Big Ten blog, we hear that the war of words between Michigan and Notre Dame (or “Cripple Fight ‘08″, as Brian from MGoBlog lovingly calls it) is heating up fast.
Apparently, Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis riled up the maize and blue as he was overheard saying “to hell with Michigan”.
We Ohio State fans recognize the complete redundancy in Weis’ supposed comment, but the words are not very popular in that state up north.
One player called Weis “arrogant” and said the comment didn’t surprise him. Fans on UM message boards are not being nearly as nice as that.
Unfortunately for fans of the Blue, Charlie Weis didn’t say “to hell with Michigan”, according to the closest witness. Barry Freeholder, a waiter from northern Indiana sheds some light on the controversy.
“I approached Coach Weis and said ‘welcome to Olive Garden’ and then I asked him what he’d like to drink this evening,” said Freeholder. “He shoved me, said ‘no beverage’, forced some ciabatta bread into his mouth and shouted ‘the shells with meat and chicken’ over and over again. Then he went from table to table, asking everyone if they were finished with their unlimited breadsticks.”
The genius head coach was later seen in the parking lot accosting a teenager whom Weis claimed was verbally abusing Michigan State. No word yet on whether or not Weis was actually discussing Michigan State or Marinara Sauce.
