In a six round welterweight fight on the Bobby D Presents fight card in San Diego, California, Maurice “Mighty Mo” Hooker (12-0-1, 9KO’s) from Dallas, Texas kept his winning streak intact.  He came into his thirteenth professional fight against southpaw Rynell Griffin (7-18-2, 2KO’s) after winning by KO’s in his last two fights, which also includes seven more KO’s on his boxing record.  Hooker is known for his long left jab, heavy body work, and his mighty right hand which usually finishes his opponents off.  This time sources have indicated that Hooker had his opponent reeling in the first round, but only to be saved by the bell.

Hooker had been training for this fight at the Wild Card Gym, which included sparring with former world champion Miguel Cotto (37-4, 30KO’s) and light welterweight Ruslan Provodnikov (22-2, 15KO’s), who will be fighting for the WBO Light Welterweight Title at the end of October against Mike Alvarado (34-1, 23KO’s).  As you recall, Alvarado won his rematch against Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios (31-1-1 23KO’s) last March with a complete exhibition of the sweet science.  And Rios is now scheduled to fight the great Manny Pacquiao (54-5, 38KO’s) in December of this year.

According to Arnie Verbeek, Mighty Mo’s manager and owner of Maple Avenue Boxing Gym in Dallas, Texas, the young light welterweight executed everything that he had been working on in the gym.  His manager also told NTF that they turned the welterweight loose in the fourth round and his fighter almost got the knockout that he had predicted himself.  Although the fight probably should have been stopped in the fifth, Griffin hung on until the end of the fight.  The young and talented Hooker went on to win by unanimous decision as all the cards read 60-54.

Hooker has been on the fast track this year as he has amassed five wins in 2013 to continue his  outstanding light welterweight record.  And at this rate, only the sky is the limit for this up and coming boxing prospect from Dallas, Texas.
