The 2010 MLB All-Star Game rosters were released today. As expected, the Tigers will be represented by Miguel Cabrera and Jose Valverde. Both made the AL roster as reserves.
Cabrera is a front-runner for the MVP race, but was beat out by Minnesota’s Justin Morneau for the starting spot at first base. Cabrera is currently 5th in the AL in batting average (.339), 2nd in home runs (20), and 2nd in RBI (69). He is well within striking distance of the leaders of all three categories and has a legitimate shot at being baseball’s first Triple Crown winner since Boston’s Carl Yastrzemski did it in 1967.
Papa Grande has proven to be worth every dollar the Tigers threw his way during the off-season so far. He is tied for 5th in the AL with 18 saves, while his 0.51 ERA leads all AL closers. He also leads the AL in number of hitters pissed off by dancing antics (HPODA).
Unfortunately for the Tigers, Justin Verlander (10-5, 3.85 ERA, 103 K’s) and Brennan Boesch (.345 average, 12 HR, 46 RBI) were both left off the roster despite being among the lead leaders in some of their respective stat categories.
