Mike Lowell has a broken rib. OF COURSE HE DOES.

The Red Sox set out to play a doubleheader against the Other Sox today and a little before the game started, news broke that Mike Lowell has a non-displaced fracture on one of his ribs.  Yep, you heard me.  He broke a rib.  It happened on a collision with John McDonald during the 8/20 game at Fenway against the Jays.  (I happened to hang out with Mikey for a while on 8/21 playing a kick arse game of Monopoly so now my mind is replaying that afternoon in my head).  Lowell said the it isn’t too bothersome and he is cleared to play, so he plans on being at first base for the rest of the season.

After the game (that the Red Sox lost by the way…more on that later), Lowell shared some more comments about his broken rib.  There are some comic gems in that article folks…like the following:

“(Adrian) Beltre didn’t even hit me,” Lowell said with a smirk, a nod to the third baseman who has fractured the ribs of two other Red Sox players this season.

“It bothers me to sleep, and it bothers me if I get fooled swinging,” he said, “so don’t get fooled. … A fracture really makes it sound worse than what it is. I guess it is. I’m not a doctor. I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express.”
