Mike Matheny Gives Us The Perfect Sentence To Sum Up 2017

MATHENY QUOTE

Here’s Cardinals manager Mike Matheny, as quoted from the Post-Dispatch:

“The guys worked hard to get us back into that one, but solo shots hurt us today,” manager Mike Matheny said. “Whenever you’re home and you get to extra innings and last night (a walk-off win in the ninth) is as fresh in your mind as you had it, you anticipate good things are going to happen. We were one hit away from having another big hit and stacking them on top of each other. Unfortunately we couldn’t finish like we needed to.”

We were one hit away from having another big hit and stacking them on top of each other.

I’m not good at math, but doesn’t that mean 0 big hits?

As in, I’m a million dollars away from my first million dollars, but once I get that first million, I’m just a million away from two million and stacking them on top of each other?

I love this logic. I’m practically a multi-millionaire!

When quotes are typed out, you sometimes loose a bit of context or voice inflection or a non-verbal cue. Maybe this totally made sense when Mr. Matheny said it out loud. Maybe it played exactly how it reads.

Either way, it’s kind of the perfect quote for the pending 2017 Cardinals season obit, right?

One win away from having another big win and stacking them on top of each other.

After 130 games played, the ledger for the Redbirds is level. 65 wins. 65 losses. All momentum is halted by a loss. All precipitous slides are saved by a win. There’s no stacking of wins… in either direction.

Mike Matheny has brilliantly summed up 2017 in a single sentence: “We were one hit away from having another big hit and stacking them on top of each other.”

Yup.

It’s perfect, actually.

There’s not much left to add.
