Mike Matheny Shares His Reading Comprehension Process To The Wall Street Journal

News outlets all over are ramping up their ‘end of the year’ coverage, taking a look back at the year that was 2014.

The Wall Street Journal asked 50 American thinkers to share what they’ve read the past 12 months.

From Gina Raimondo (Governor-elect of Rhode Island) to Howard Schultz (Chairman and CEO of Starbucks), these luminaries foisted their learned knowledge upon us, the unwashed masses, in bite sized chunks so our simple minds could understand.

Mike Matheny, of course, was one of the 50:

For me, reading is an active process; I highlight books extensively and fill the margins with notes. After I finish, I go back through a second time and transfer the thoughts into a notebook. I am a firm believer that the best leaders are both learners and readers. As a young manager, with less experience than most of my counterparts, I know I have plenty to learn, and I am typically reading multiple books at the same time. While I usually read about leadership development, I also enjoy biographies of successful sports figures and catalysts in the corporate and military worlds. My standouts in 2014 were “Coach Wooden’s Greatest Secret” by Pat Williams, “Fight” by Craig Groeschel and “Leaders Who Last” by Dave Kraft. These great reads challenged me in every area of my life and helped me become a better coach, husband, father and friend.

So there you have it. Skip is a bit more erudite than we may have believed.
