Plenty of big leaguers will have surgeries this off season to fix the little things that ail them. Happens every year.
Mike Napoli is one of those guys.
But here’s the thing, the Boston Red Sox first baseman has been dealing with finger, toe and back issues, but that’s not what he’s getting checked out. Dude is having, wait for it, facial reconstruction surgery. Yup, you read that correctly.
“I’ve been dealing with sleep apnea for a long time, my whole career,” Napoli told WEEI.com. “I’ve tried numerous things and none of them worked. Dental mouth piece, CPAP machine, medicines … It’s just gotten to the point where I have to get this done.”
The procedure, called bimaxillary advancement surgery, involves doctors separating the front portions of the upper and lower jaws and moving them forward…allowing for more room behind the tongue and, therefore, reducing the chances of the airway being obstructed.
Napoli is going under the knife November 4 and is expected to be recuperated and ready in time for the 2015.
