Wednesday’s game against the Mets was over for the Brewers almost before it had a chance to begin. The Mets put up six runs in the first inning on Brewers starter Dave Bush. Bush lasted five innings as his record fell to 9-10 on the season but manager Ned Yost should have lifted him in the first. Bush was getting hit hard and the highlight of the inning for the Mets was a grand slam by Ryan Church. The Mets wound up winning the series finale 9-2 against the Crew.
Seth McClung did a nice job in relief, pitching two scoreless innings. Mitch Stetter and Tim Dillard, both of whom joined the team with the September call-ups, gave up the final three runs to the Mets in garbage time.
JJ Hardy hit his 21st home run of the season while Gabe Kapler scored the only other run being knocked in by Corey Hart. The highlights of the day for me were the first Major League at bats for highly-touted prospects Angel Salome, Alcides Escobar and Mat Gamel. Escobar picked up his first big league hit one day after fellow prospect Brad Nelson notched his first hit.
This was a very tough series to watch as a fan and reminded me of the Cubs series in July. The Brewers caught fire after being swept by the Cubs so I’m hoping the same will hold true now. The Padres come to town this weekend followed by a three game series with the Reds. The Brewers should feast on two teams with nothing to play for. Anything less than 5-2 over these two series will be a huge disappointment and then questions about the Brewers choking will surface.
