<![CDATA[The Phillies took an absolute punch to the gut Sunday afternoon up in New York. Up 4-1 heading to the ninth inning, the Phillies bullpen needed to put together three outs to record the 100th career game for starting pitcher Cole Hamels. Hamels battled at times against his old nemesis, but he managed to get the job done for the milestone victory. Instead, the Mets put together three runs in the ninth inning and walked off with a victory to salvage a game in the weekend series two innings later, giving up 16 hits to a line-up that has struggled on offense recently.
As the saying goes, misery loves company. Perhaps it is a bit fitting that on this otherwise beautiful Mother’s Day Sunday the Chicago Cubs joined the Phillies and Atlanta Braves in a rather exclusive club no professional sports franchise wants to be a part of. The Braves topped the Cubs Sunday afternoon, handing the National League club from Chicago the 10,000th loss in franchise history. Welcome to the club, Cubbies.
As Crashburn Alley‘s Bill Baer notes on Hardball Talk, the Pittsburgh Pirates are on track to be the next member of the 10k Loss Club. Pittsburgh is 55 losses away from the dubious milestone. The Pirates will enter Sunday night’s game against St. Louis already with 20 losses on the year, so 55 more may not be that far out of the question. The Cincinnati Reds will be next in line but they will not enter that conversation for a few more years.]]>
