MLB: Athletics Place Closer Sean Doolittle On 15-Day Disabled List

The Oakland Athletics are going to be without closer Sean Doolittle, as he was placed on the 15-day disabled list with an oblique injury.

Doolittle has been solid for Oakland this season, racking up 20 saves for the playoff-bound Athletics.  Doolittle originally started the season as a setup man. Originally, the closer role was held by Jim Johnson, whom the team acquired from the Baltimore Orioles.

Johnson was ineffective in the role, recording two saves with a 5.96 ERA in the season’s first two months. He has since been released from the team.

There is no timetable for Doolittle’s return, but as with all oblique injuries, time must be taken. In the meantime, the closer role could be held by Eric O’Flaherty.

The team also acquired catcher Geovany Soto from the Rangers for cash considerations. It’s a puzzling move for the Athletics as they already have two catchers on the roster. Soto, along with John Jaso, will likely serve as backups to catcher Derek Norris.
