MLB Playoffs on TBS… It Got Weird, Didn’t It?

You’d think TBS’ coverage of the MLB Playoffs couldn’t get any weirder than Ron Darling’s infatuation with calling the Twins “gutsy,” Chip Caray talking about “fisted” balls, and Craig Sager’s suits.  And it may not.

But on Wednesday night after the Dodgers completed their victory over the Cardinals, Dick Stockton sent it back to the Atlanta studio where Ernie Johnson was with Dennis Eckersley, David Wells, and Cal Ripken Jr.

After plugging various advertisements that sponsored the upcoming highlights, Ernie previewed the segment after the break by saying, “you’ll get the insights of the Hall of Famers….”

Long pause.  Nearly three seconds to be exact.  It’s at the moment he says Hall of Famers he realizes not all former MLB’ers sitting with him are Hall of Famers. He then stutters his way through the ending line of, “and… David Wells….and….”

Poor David Wells.

At least Wells was aware of it and made a crack to kind of ease the tension.  He referred to himself as the “Wannabe” Hall of Famer and everyone had a good, uncomfortable chuckle.

I imagine the commercial break between Ernie Johnson and David Wells went something like this (well, up until the 35 second mark anyway.  I think.  I don’t think Wells is pregnant and in love with Ernie):
