Looking at possible trade destinations for Paul Goldschmidt

MLB: Los Angeles Dodgers at Arizona Diamondbacks

Houston Astros

This would be something, wouldn’t it?

Although they did regress as a unit compared to their championship season in 2017, the Astros’ offense remains very deep and talented. Manager A.J. Hinch already has the pleasure of penciling in guys like Jose Altuve, George Springer, and Carlos Correa into his lineup card on a nightly basis, but it could always get better.

Yuli Gurriel was also reasonably productive with the bat as Houston’s primary first baseman last season (.291/.323/.428 with 13 homers, 85 RBI, 107 wRC+). The x-factor here is Marwin Gonzalez, as it sounds like the versatile utility man will be taking his talents elsewhere via free agency. Gurriel is set to fill Gonzalez’s role, meaning regular playing time could be had at first base.

Tyler White could man that position and the Astros have been connected to Nelson Cruz in free agency as they’re looking to upgrade the offense. Getting one year of Goldschmidt at a reasonable price (outside of the prospect cost) for a team currently in the middle of their championship window has to be enticing.
