MLB: Yozzen Cuesta and Misael Siverio Latest Cuban Defectors Ready To Come To America

With the Boston Red Sox recent signing of Rusney Castillo to a seven-year $72 million deal, the international free-agent market is certainly heating up, and it’s about to get hotter.

yozzen cuestaReports are that Yozzen Cuesta and Misael Siverio are looking to be the latest Cuban defectors to try their luck in the MLB. The two hopefuls will displayed their talents Friday during a showcase in Florida.

Both Cuesta and Siverio have been on team’s radars for some time.

Siverio has been eligible for free agency since May. Cuesta was just recently given free agent status, almost a year after he defected from his team during a tournament in Canada.

There is not much known about Yozzen Cuesta. We do know he is a 25-year-old first baseman, and displays some power in his bat. Currently listed at 6’2″ and weighs 220 pounds, Cuesta is a relatively young player that might peak the interest of teams looking for a first baseman in free agency.

Misael Siverio isn’t the unkown that Cuesta is. Siverio is a 5’9″ lefty that doesn’t have a very effective fastball as it only sits around the 86-87 MPH range, however many who have seen him pitch say his curveball is his more efficient pitch. Siverio posted a 3.24 ERA and a 7.6 K/9 ratio in a career that included 75 starts for Cuba’s Serie Nacional.

Siverio recently pitched in Mexico during the winter posting a 2.45 ERA.

Siverio’s Cuban team manager stated that the only reason he was on the team was due to him being a lefty and not because of his skill. Those words have not halted any interest in him. Siverio held a showcase in May that was attended by ten teams including the Yankees, Cubs, and Astros.

Despite the mystery behind the two, it is expected that most MLB teams will attend the showcase.

There has been no sign of the type of contract Cuesta and Siverio are looking to receive, but with the way MLB teams have spent you can bet they won’t come cheap.
