Just in time for the Christmas holiday season, McFarlane Toys will introduce the Robert Griffin III action figure doll in the upcoming McFarlane NFL SportsPick debut. From McFarlane’s press release:
”Baylor QB Robert Griffin III was awarded this year’s Heisman Trophy and became the first Quarterback drafted from the University since 1987 (Drafted #2 overall). His rare combination of accuracy, arm strength and athleticism has all the fans in Washington D.C. clamoring to see him take the field. Griffin’s debut figure will be sporting his new Nike-branded Redskins home jersey, which will be on retail shelves with the rest of NFL series 31 this holiday season.”
It’s about time I upgraded my out-dated antique historic Theismann Redskins quarterback action figure. The legs fell off when I picked it up. I cringed just like I did when Lawrence Taylor ended Theismann’s career.
McFarlane has been making these figures since at least 2002. Hog Heaven hasn’t been paying attention because, well, not many Redskins have been cast as a collectible sports super hero doll. There was a Clinton Portis in 2008. John Riggins appears in McFarlane’s NFL Legend Series 4. But, I will want to get a RG3 to put in front of the big screen.
McFarlane plans to release an Andrew Luck figurine in Series 30 of the SportsPicks.
“McFarlane Toys is the fifth largest action figure manufacturer in the United States. Established in 1994 to manufacture and sell action figures based on founder Todd McFarlane’s comic book character Spawn, the international award-winning company has expanded into licensed products to become one of the premiere action figure producers on the planet.” (Their words, not mine.)
Heisman, Letterman, Leno and now boy’s toy; it seems our Mr. Griffin has already become a cultural icon. What we really want to know is the official Madden 13 rating for RG3. That will be big news when it is announced. (Unofficial Madden rating found here.)
