Monday Links – Jim Zorn Fired, Chris Johnson hits 2,000 yards, St. Louis is on top (of the bottom), & The U.S. Olympic Hockey Roster

It’s been a nice long winter’s nap for me, but now that 2010 is here, it’s back to business for us all.

  • Ed. note: Jim Zorn was fired by the Redskins and escorted from the building around 4:30 this morning.  1) Why was he at the stadium so late/early?  2) Why did he need to be escorted? Mike Shanahan must have had a 5 AM interview.
  • The big news from yesterday’s NFL action (other than various face plants around the league) came out of Seattle. Tennessee Titans RB Chris Johnson became the 6th player in NFL history to rush for 2,000 yards in one season. Cop Speed Zulu has been shredding defenses all season, even with him team stumbling out of the gate. The Sporting News has your Wild Card weekend schedule here, complete with three rematches from this week’s action.
  • On the other end of the spectrum sit the St. Louis Rams. With their 28-6 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, the Rams locked up the first pick in the NFL draft sweepstakes for Nebraska DT Ndamukong Suh. Fortunately for the Lions, St. Louis desperately needs a quarterback. With our beloved kitties sitting in the #2 slot, Suh may still end up in Honolulu blue next season if the Rams believe that an emu can turn their franchise around.

  • Oops. Pittsburgh Penguins announcer Bob Errey mistakes the word “puck” for something similar during yesterday’s Penguins-Panthers telecast. To his credit, either word fits in that situation.
  • I haven’t had a chance to say anything about it yet, but the Herm to Hockeytown campaign at Abel to Yzerman is coming along very well. All money raised from now on is going to the Children’s Hospital of Michigan. Check out A2Y for the details.
  • I wasn’t able to watch this year’s Winter Classic, but if it was anything like the last two, I’m on board with a couple of the ideas Big League Stew has for future outdoor hockey games. Obviously, the CoPa would be great. Minnesota and Pittsburgh (though at Heinz Field, not PNC) would also be great venues. But Chavez Ravine? Seriously?
  • The U.S. hockey team headed to Vancouver next month was announced during the aforementioned Winter Classic on New Years Day. As John Keating was quick to remind him during last night’s Wings game, Red Wings defenseman Brian Rafalski is the oldest member of a very young American squad. An upset of the Canadian juggernaut isn’t likely, but I think we’d all love to see it happen. If you’re more interested in the Wings that will be taking part, check out the full list at Winging It in Motown.
  • Kissing Suzy Kolber feels the pain of all New Englanders (seriously? that’s what they’re called? I’m never moving to Boston) and takes a look at the injury to Wes Welker during yesterday’s game vs. Houston. Make sure you check out the replay of their live blog too.

Rob’s Highlight of the Day

I loved this play for two reasons. #1 is obvious by watching the video, but listening my dad go through an expletive-laden rant after the play about how John Harbaugh needs to give the ball to Ray Rice more to help his fantasy team was classic. Thank you for a very entertaining day Willis McGahee. [via The Big Lead]
