I saw this commercial about 25,000 times last night during the Michigan-Miami hockey game, so I feel like I have to subject all y’all to the same torture. Happy Monday everyone. (Credit to Kyle at Babcock’s Death Stare for part of the title)
- Wings goalie James Tiberius “Jimmy” Howard got some nice praise from ESPN’s Scott Burnside after stonewalling the Nashville Predators on Saturday. I don’t know if Howard will get any consideration for the Hart trophy, but some Vezina hype is both deserved and likely to happen. I still think Ryan Miller will take home the latter award, but Howard should get a few votes thrown his way.
- On Friday, the long-anticipated Herm to Hockeytown event took place. Based on Twitter reports (sorry Ellen), the group drank the city of Detroit dry, and pictures are just starting to surface. Based on everything I’ve seen so far, the entire night looked like a hell of a time. Check out Herm meeting his idol (Darren Helm) below. [via H2H]
- Michigan G Manny Harris will announce his decision on his NBA draft plans later today, but the belief is that Manny Fresh will test the waters in pre-draft camp. Hopefully he holds off on hiring an agent to see where he stands, but his reportedly rocky relationship with John Beilein doesn’t bode well for the Wolverines.
- It looks like one of the 162 different lineups Jim Leyland will use this year is set. Leyland is notorious for tinkering with his day-to-day lineup, so don’t read too far into what he’s got for Opening Day. Thankfully, you don’t need to read too far into the rumors that the Tigers are “looking to upgrade at second base” because they aren’t, despite what Richard Gere tries to tell Marlboro Jim.
- Guyism came up with a list of 8 fast food items that probably aren’t too good for you, but are really good tasting. I don’t know whether to be proud or horrified that I eat half of these on a semi-regular basis. Especially those KFC bowls, those things are awesome. Joey Porter is not amused.
- Street Level has another interesting list posted: the 10 most disappointing NBA retirements of all-time. A couple are going to be obvious (MJ & Magic, cough cough) but some of the others are pretty interesting, including a former fan-favorite in Ann Arbor.
- Reports say that the NHL’s next Winter Classic will feature two of the biggest stars in the game. Oh, and Sid the Bitch will be there too. The Washington Capitals against the Pittsburgh Penguins at Heinz Field will definitely bring in some big ratings, but I liked the recent trend of holding it in historical baseball stadiums. Too bad they were a bit late on Yankee Stadium.
Rob’s Highlight of the Day
Ersan Ilyasova was overshadowed by Josh Smith’s tip-dunk that sent the Hawks to the playoffs, but his throwdown over shot-blocked Samuel Dalembert is worth another look.
