Monday Links – Tiger Interviewed By ESPN, Michael Jordan Becomes Bobcats’ Owner, Joe Mauer Signs Extension, & Joe Nathan to Have Tommy John Surgery

It’s been an awesome weekend here at D4L headquarters. We’ve seen a ton of great basketball, some intense hockey games, and even a couple good movies. My TV needs more of a break than I do. For those of our readers who appreciate good writing, you’ll be happy to know that Bob should be back from Vegas today, unless his friends locked his ass on the roof of the real Caesar’s Palace. Until then, I’m sure he’ll be enjoying these links just as much as you are.

  • ESPN interviewed Tiger Woods for the first time since his Thanksgiving night crash and subsequent fall from grace, because apparently he needs to explain why money and power caused him to do the things he did. Click here for a full transcript of the interview, and check out Deadspin for information on an interview Tiger did with the Golf Channel’s Kelly Tilghman. Honestly, I’m sick of this whole ordeal. I just want to watch the man golf again.
  • A big story that I missed over the weekend was Michael Jordan becoming the owner of the Charlotte Bobcats. Jordan is excited, as you’d imagine, and when asked what type of owner he would be, he compared himself to Mark Cuban. Not a bad start if you ask me.
  • I already covered Michigan’s big win to extend their NCAA tournament streak, but it’s nice to see Shawn Hunwick and the rest of the Wolverines getting some love from Puck Daddy. Apparently people like the story of a pint-sized walk-on leading a team to the promised land. I’ll be happy with four more wins from the Wolverines, regardless of who’s in net.
  • Bad news out of Minnesota, but a blessing for the rest of the AL Central: Twins closer Joe Nathan will have Tommy John surgery on his right (pitching) elbow, ending his season before it even started. Nathan has never blown a game against the Tigers, so maybe this will open the door for an extra win or two for Detroit this season. They definitely could have used it once last year. • On a similar note, those same Minnesota Twins agreed to a record-breaking extension with catcher Joe Mauer. Although this isn’t especially good for the Tigers, I’m happy Minnesota opened up the wallet to pay a homegrown star instead of trading him to New York or Boston. Twinkie Town is understandably excited, and has a theoretical year-by-year breakdown of the deal.
  • The Cleveland Cavaliers swept the season series with the Pistons for the first time in over 30 years with a 104-79 win last night. Coach John Kuester finally admitted what we’ve all wanted to hear for a while now: the Pistons are “building for next year,” which is coach-speak for “tanking to get more lottery balls for our best shot at DeMarcus Cousins.” As long as the Pistons give the younger guys more minutes and the kids play hard, I’m all for it.
  • Holy shit, this is impressive. His buddies didn’t even have the time to start a “CHUG, CHUG, CHUG” chant. Don’t drink and drive, kids.
  • The first round of Cougar Madness at Thunder Treats is over, and there were some awesome upsets.  The round two results should be released soon. Unfortunately, I haven’t heard of a lot of the lower seeds (sounds like the real NCAA tournament…), but I’ll definitely trust DiLo when he says that they’re hot. Still, I’m sticking with my original Heather Graham pick. Round 2 results should be released soon.
  • According to Sharapova’s Thigh, Hayden Panettiere is still dating gigantic boxer Wladimir Klitschko, and sporting a pretty bad fake tan in the process. We’re big fans of her here at D4L and we think she can do better. Or at least find someone the same age.

Rob’s Highlight of the Day

I don’t know what hurts more after this dunk: Theo Ratliff’s ego or his back. Either way, Josh Smith’s slam was definitely worth sharing.
