Monday Morning Commentary – Fall Camp

The opening of fall camps have come and gone with some great fanfare.

2011 Last Check-in for us and for BOOM, currently in camp with the Bengals

Fans wait all summer for the day that the players move into their fall camp motel dragging their big electronics and suitcases prepared for what little free time they will have during the hell weeks leading up to the start of the season. The change from quarters to semesters has effectively taken all that fun for the fans away.

We probably will never enjoy these check-ins as we have in the past. For most fans it’s really the very first time we can get a good look at what kind of shape the players are in. We also get to spend a good portion of a full day just trying to get caught up on the story lines surrounding the check in. We get the opportunity to overdose on info coming out of two-a-days and how the team is preparing. Happening this we feels a little anticlimactic. There’s always some great pics and usually at the expense of some of the players looks we have some “this needs a caption” contests on the message boards.

The fact is that everyone that will be on the roster for this fall was already there at the beginning of summer semester and therefore in there dorms or apartments. They will have the opportunity to check in to hotel hell at their convenience. This aspect of fall camp isn’t the only part that has really put a damper on us fans enjoying the opening of it. The players also still have a full week of finals and whatnot to finish up summer semester. two-a-days don’t officially begin until the end of this week and then we can really get into the countdown to the first game under head coach Urban Meyer.

A big thank you to Josh Winslow photography for the photos from last season. If you want to enjoy these pics then go here because there will probably never be a fall check-in again. Thank you to all of the past players that gave us a lot of fun seeing the items that you brought in with you to entertain yourself while having very little down time.

If youv’e been hiding under a rock then you missed the return of our fearless leader Mali. If youv’e stayed under said rock then you missed the debut of guest writer Janelle and the addition of Tim Shoemaker. Look forward to some more good things from both in the coming days!

This is a great time to be a buckeye fan. I had a mountaineer fan say to me yesterday that “you guys are playing for nothing this year” My initial thought was to say, “you guys play for nothing every year”, but alas they are not in the BLeast anymore. My real response was “we have alot to play for. All of the games count. If we win we get a W, if we lose we get an L. The bottom line is, everyone else should be very happy we can’t go win it all. two years ago we played for nothing and thats in the past. But don’t ever tell any of the players those games were for nothing, ever. And take this season for what it is, the Buckeyes will be serving notice they were just taking a short hiatus.
