Morning Cup of Joe: Don’t compare Hackenberg to Collins just yet

Today on the site I started what will be a season-long series looking back at the 1994 Penn State football season the way I remember it. It was 20 years ago today the season got started with a blowout in the Metrodome. I was not able to watch it on TV, so I had to get updates from my dad, who sat in the living room on the couch and listened to the whole game on the radio. It was a different era, that’s for sure. Of course, even if you were able to watch that game, you missed some good stuff it seems.

//platform.twitter.com/widgets.jsPenn State has a pretty good quarterback situation going with Christian Hackenberg, of course. Even though he was not the sharpest he could have been at times against UCF, he still managed to break the school’s single-game passing record and become the first 400-yard passer in school history. Some are already suggesting he is the best quarterback in Penn State history. I happen to agree with David Jones of The Patriot News in suggesting we pump the brakes on that thought. Kerry Collins was pretty darn good too.

Not really sure what is happening with Wisconsin’s situation under center. There seems to be some confusion over the quarterback situation, but Madtown Badgers attempts to straighten it out for us. As it turns out, the Big Ten West just became quite the cluster according to The Student Section. The editorial staff over at TSS also discuss poll voting and Wisconsin.

Speaking of Madtown Badgers, over on No 2-Minute Warning, I have a Week 1 Rewind podcast with Andy Coppens with some extended conversation about the Big Ten’s opening week highs and lows. I also dabble in a spur-of-the-moment method to compare strength of schedule, in which Penn State helped boost the Big Ten’s score on the opening weekend.

Coming up later today will be the Wednesday installment of The Nittany Minute.
