Hey, what do you know. Penn State football still exists!
Well, here we are. Penn State football is still here and getting ready for the 2015 season. They may even be good. Maybe even sleeper good. But let’s not get too carried away just yet. It is amazing though to think about just how far this program has come in the past three years. We are now three years removed from the NCAA sanctions being issued to Penn State. Many wrote the program off for dead and suggested it would struggle to compete against Indiana State, let alone Indiana. As you no doubt are fully aware, those sanction terms have been eliminated and things are starting to look pretty optimistic for Penn State’s football future.
Around the Big Ten
You may have heard the latest on the quarterback situation at Ohio State. Braxton Miller, the two-time Silver Football winner, will be moving to a new position. This trims the quarterback race down to two; Cardale Jones and J.T. Barrett. I am now officially on record saying Jones will be the best pick to start under center for the Buckeyes this season, but Urban Meyer really cannot go wrong either way. As I wrote on No 2-Minute Warning, I have a tremendous amount of respect for what Miller is doing to remain a contributor at Ohio State.
Wisconsin recently denied admission to a key Class of 2015 addition, running back Jordan Stevenson. This means his recruitment is now on rush mode as he still hopes to be able to play college football this fall. Wisconsin’s admissions standards have been discussed before, and Madtown Badgers wonders if they have helped avoid a potential headache. Former coach Gary Andersen, who just ran off to Oregon State after getting ambushed 59-0 in the Big Ten championship game, seemed to wish things were different when it comes to Wisconsin’s academic policies. I’ll applaud Wisconsin for not lowering the bar though, even if it makes things more difficult on the field.
Around the Nation
Good old Bret Bielema has provided Texas head coach Charlie Strong with some bulletin board material this offseason… Alabama and Florida State each due $5 million for appearing in the 2017 Chick-fil-A Kickoff (which begs the question…)… Pitt wide receiver Tyler Boyd got off with probation for a DUI.
