“Come on, baby, do the locomotion. Chug-a chug-a motion like a railroad train now. Come on, baby, do the locomotion.” From the song “The Locomotion” written by the great Carole King and immortalized by Grand Funk Railroad. Yes, there was a lot of motion – and some of it certainly was “loco motion” – in the Women’s World Volleyball Championship today, Day 13 of this tournament and Sunday, October 5, 2014.
Day 13 Highlights
Brazil swept USA to clinch first place in Pool F, 25-23, 25-22, and 25-21. The sweep is something of a surprise, although Brazil was ranked number one in the world at the start of the tournament. The USA coaching staff, led by Karch Kiraly and Marv Dunphy, will undoubtedly have the USA team ready to go in Milan.
Italy defeated China 3 – 1 (22-25, 25-18, 26-24, and 25-17) to move ahead of China into first place in Pool E. China’s Coach Lang Ping and her team will obviously regroup and also be ready to go in Milan
In a battle for third place in Pool F, Russia swept Serbia, 28-26, 25-18, and 25-17.
In Pool E Japan defeated Dominican Republic in 5 sets, 25-21, 25-23, 19-25, 23-25, and 15-12. Dominican Republic, however, had already secured third place and could not gain second place.
And, so, without much fanfare, Round 2 of the FIVB Women’s World Volleyball Championship draws to a close. The top three teams in Pool E and Pool F advance to form Pools G and H for Round 3 in Milan. Round 3 will begin in Milan on October 8 after a two day rest and recovery period. The six teams advancing to Round 3, in “points earned” order, are Brazil, Italy, USA, China, Russia and Dominican Republic. The pools and schedule for Round 3 will be determined tomorrow at 2:00 PM Italy time and 8:00 AM Eastern US time.
One added bonus to the advancement to Day 16 and Round 3 is that the infernal FIVB Point System is no longer in play. All results henceforth are based on head to head competition results, and a win is a win, not a two point win or a three point win.
A whole lot of statistics and “other stuff” follow. Hope you enjoy them and keep on supporting this fantastic sport. As always, let’s grow the game together!
