MTB Mailbag: 1st Edition

bettmancrosby

In an effort to be the most interactive we can be with our fellow Badger fans we introduce to you the newest feature here on the site – the MTB Mailbag. It’s your chance to ask us questions and have them answered by our panel of writers. We kick things off with two questions curtosey of followers on Twitter, so let’s get to your questions, shall we?

From @ketchupking22: Do you think the same chemistry can be had this year with new QB as with @DangeRussWilson (a.k.a. Russell Wilson) last year?

Heck of a question and I think this will be the biggest storyline to unfold in fall camp – at least on the field. Wilson did a great job fitting right in with the unit and a lot of that had to do with having a veteran like Nick Toon to throw the ball to as well.

This season we’re looking at a very young and inexperienced group outside of Jared Abbrederis, so he’ll need to try and bring along the rest of the guys. But the one advantage that whomever the QB is going to be – and more on that later in camp – will have is that they’ll have been working with the wide receivers all summer long and that is a direct correlation to building chemistry. The only downfall is that they’ve been splitting snaps pretty evenly in camp and that could lead to issues in the chemistry department if it continues deep into camp. I look for whomever wins the battle to be the one that has the best grasp of the offense and has shown the ability to get the best out of the wide receivers group, so in the end I think the chemistry will be there no matter who’s behind center.

From @bdavis_1113: Who will start at RG for the Badgers, Burge or Costigan?

Of the three position battles for starting spots on the roster this camp this could be the one that has the most mystery behind it. Burge wasn’t around in the spring and Costigan was just switched over to the position during the spring, so there’s not much known about the two guys most likely to get the shot at starting against Northern Iowa on Sept. 1st.

Burge’s story is a great one, going from walk-on to possible starter and clearly Costigan has some pure athletic talent or he wouldn’t be in the conversation to begin with. Bielema has repeatedly said that the best five players will be starting and if I had a guess at this point without seeing them in person this fall camp – yet… I’d say Costigan gets the job. He was a former offensive lineman in high school and by all indications he’s adjusting to the change quickly which gives me a clue that new o-line coach Mike Markuson likes what he sees from Costigan. I’ll take pure athletic talent over medicore talent any day of the week at the guard position.

(btw we’ll be in Madison this weekend to witness practice and also attend Wisconsin’s Media Day, so make sure to follow us all weekend long as we bring you the best in Badgers coverage of any blog out there!)
