The Mullen Files: Top 5 2014 NFL Fantasy Football Quarterbacks

1. Peyton Manning, Denver Broncos – Manning is without a doubt, the number one fantasy football quarterback in 2014. In 2013, Manning threw for an incredible 55 touchdowns and only 10 interceptions. His wide receiver corps were tall and talented. It will only help Manning and his numbers that he is spending another year with his young receivers. Although Eric Decker was lost to free agency, it is time for the next man to step up. However, it could be said that Manning made Decker and that receiving corp. Either way, as long as Manning is behind center in that Broncos offense, he will be the number one 2014 fantasy football quarterback.

2. Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints – Brees, like Manning, is a stalwart in the top five fantasy football quarterback lists. Although Brees was slowed early in camp by a minor oblique strain he has not been showing any effects recently. He not only threw for over 5,000 yards a third year in a row in 2013 but he also threw for 39 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. What to expect from him in 2014? More of the same. Brees is consistent and can always be counted on.

3. Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers – After a broken collarbone in Week 9 last year, some fantasy players began to devalue Rodgers. However, Rodgers is not one to continuously get injured. He is a QB that can always be counted on just like Brees and Manning. He will benefit from second year running back Eddie Lacy coupled with the desire for the Packers to run 75 plays per game in their new hurry up offense. This could be the season Rodgers passes Brees and Manning to become the number one fantasy football quarterback.

4. Andrew Luck, Indianapolis Colts – Luck looked shaky in his last preseason game. But, do not get worried because it is only preseason. We always want to see our guys have superb games even if it is preseason but if they do not it’s usually not a big deal. This is one of those cases. Luck ended 2013 on a sour note with a playoff loss and  seven playoff interceptions. His regular season numbers were much better with 23 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. You can expect more of the same (regular season) from Luck this year. The one thing I consistently worry about is the effect that a lack of a decent run game will have on the Colts passing game. If you are a Luck owner, you also need to hope for Trent Richardson to turn things around quickly in 2014.

5. Matthew Stafford, Detroit Lions – Stafford is helped tremendously by the return of Joique Bell in the running game. Reggie Bush and Calvin Johnson are still part of the firepower for the Lions and Stafford can be counted on for a few big games a year. Although the offense seemed to scuffle in the preseason, I would have no worries about Stafford going forward. He is a fantasy star.
