MUNSON’S GAZETTA: Hailey Mills’ Panties and Their Relevance to the Broncos

When I was in parochial school in the very early 60’s I quickly concluded that those considered “smart” had to work much harder and got a lot more grief than those not.  The curse of high expectations. Determined to undergo as little hassle in life as possible, I very unobtrusively got myself into the lowest quadrant in the diocese-were talking “D”‘s here. That meant I could do pretty much what I wanted, which was nothing. I also determined that priests had the absolute best gig going-even at 10 you had to be an idiot not to see that the nuns did all the real work and compared to your dad the priests were seriously coasting. All of this came to a crashing halt  when I saw “The Parent Trap”. In a scene that lives with me to this day, Mills’ twin sister(Mills) cuts away the back of her dress revealing her white-pantied round bottom in all its pubescent glory. No, I didn’t suddenly say “if I want to get up Hailey’s ass I’ll have to study harder.” But inexorably, from that point on, a growing awareness developed which basically sums up human existence (at least for men)-if I ‘m goin to get THAT, I gotta’ do something. I’ll spare you the details; suffice it to say this marks the point that I was expected to do more, get more , “be” more. The bar gets raised higher, then higher. Now recall that a very few years ago we were delighted to see the Broncos ranked AT ALL.

I beleive it was the 2002 season when we ended up 12th; Paul J was rhapsodic. But stresses occur. Recall our highest pre-season ranking was 18th in 2005-and what happened at Georgia(although I still consider that to be more one person meltdown). Our team just wasn’t used to it. Now this season. 3 weeks in we get a #5; it’s one thing to be drifitng around in the teens, inconspicuosly rising a notch here and there, not much serious attention ’til the last few weeks. Just win; style points-ehh/ But #5; this is serious. So in the Tulsa game, a slow start and then Tulsa scores. Broncos got to think “now we need to put up X points” to make the “nut” of the BCS  crowd. When that happens guys start pressing etc. What I’m saying is we’ve reached a new level of expectations. This is a young team and indeed a “young” program(on the national level). We have glimpsed the national championship chimera, which, like Hailey MIlls’s panties, remains unattainably perched on her impossibly long legs on the screen above us as we sit in the dark clutching much more than a bag of popcorn.  We must  focus and remind oursleves,Bronco players and fans, to expect only what Churchill exhorted:blood, sweat, toil and tears.
