My Bills/Chiefs recap: stats, commentary and 1-2 swear words

I’ve written this story too many times since launching this site…

The Bills being in the “In the Hunt” graphic by the skin of their teeth when the calendar turns to December and the Bills losing a game that they seemed to have complete control over.  Its Deja Vu X 15. Nothing changes it seems like. The Chiefs aren’t world-beaters by any stretch of the imagination and when you have a 10 point lead to start off the game, you should be in control for that game. Instead, we add #challengegate to #Tuelgate and to #Byrcefumblegate when it comes to playing the Chiefs.

You can pick whatever narrative you want coming out of this game and go on for about 300 words on what cost the Bills. Its hard for me to feel good about this team when you are only 5-6 and have invested that much money into this all-world coaching staff and players. You win this game and you are probably making the playoffs. Think about that…you are in the driver’s seat and you start thinking about playoff match-ups even. That’s something we have never had in the last 15 years. Instead, its this….stupid coaching + blowing 10 point leads= 15 years of zero playoffs. It’s the same tired story that no one wants to write or read about because its overkill. Anyways, this sucks and here’s where the Bills went wrong…

—This was the Rex Ryan Jets fans hated in NYC. Sure, some of it had to do with his valor quotes going on deaf ears after awhile. However, a lot of it had to do with stupid challenges and offensive game management when it came to going for it on 4th down. In regards to the Maclin challenge, yeah, who knows if the refs decide to invoke the Burt Emmanuel rule or just decide to make it up at this point. Still, why not challenge it?  The Hogan miss was crucial. The guy made like 4 football moves and was tackled!!! DID YOU WANT HIM TO DANCE AFTERWARDS OR SOMETHING FOR IT TO BE A COMPLETED PASS!?

Then we can go to the wasted ones like the Woods drop (Note: You suck balls and should have caught it cleanly) and Taylor leaping for a 1st down. It seemed like Rex started having that deer in a headlight POV when it came to challenging. You don’t challenge the Hogan drop, but challenge the Woods one? Did Hogan need to rip off his helmet in disgust to say he caught the ball to get Rex’s attention? Oh, and don’t forget punting inside Chiefs territory in the 4th quarter. Anyways, this wasn’t Rex’s finest day when it came to game management. Also, fuck the refs who still don’t know what a catch is.

—It was a tale of two halves for the offense:

  • Tyrod Taylor in the 1st half: 14 of 26 for 236 yards and 2 TD. 2nd half: 7 of 12 for 55 yards and 1 TD.
  • Sammy Watkins 1st half: 6 catches on 9 targets for 158 yards and 2 TDs. 2nd half: 1 target, 0 catches.
  • Total yards in the 1st half: 296 yards. Total yards in the 2nd half: 119 yards.

The Sammy targeting stuff is a strange one. Its not like the Chiefs were just single covering him in the first half. Half the throws that Tyrod threw to him seemed to have 2 guys draped all over him. Maybe the Bills decided to try and get the other guys in the 2nd half involved? If Sammy is this dynamic, you need to get the ball to him more even with double coverage. Also, it would help if Robert Woods and Chuck Clay were actually making other teams pay when they are doubling #14.

Football 101 tells me that if you are doubling a dynamic WR, other guys should be open. Robert Woods sucks. 3 catches for 25 yards and a terrible drop didn’t help matters with him today. He’s a #3 WR who has been positioned by the Bills and some fans to be a #2 guy and he hasn’t shown that in his 3 years here. 8 games this season he’s had 3 catches or fewer. He’s not a #2WR. Not even close.

As for Taylor, he had a lot of ups/downs. I think he played hurt for the most part as some of his throws to the outside seemed to be wobbling and had a lot of air under them. Still, I think if you go back to what the preseason expectations were, you’d totally take 291 yard/3TD game. I think if you view Tyrod as being a franchise QB for the ultimate goal, you aren’t going to be happy. I also think him being a 6th round pick to go along with the hunger Bills fans have for finding a legit QB, your patience is going to be awfully thin. What Tyrod did today should have been enough if you are going back to what the Bills original plan was for this season to win games.

—I listened to Rex’s excuse after the game and he spoke about coaches not seeing the replays? Um, were they watching the cheerleader cam?

—3 Memos to Greg Roman: 1) Stop running Tits Dixon East/west on sweeps. He’s fat. Fat people run north and south. 2) Don’t put Tits Dixon in on 2 point conversions. 3) Run more tosses to McCoy to get him more steam on his runs.

—Only the Bills defense could make Tom Brady look like Alex Smith one week and then the next week they make Alex Smith look like Tom Brady. I hated the defense today. Don’t let any hack tell you that they didn’t miss Mario. They got zero pressure on Alex Smith today and too often they were dropping 7 or 8 men back into coverage. Sorry, but if you are missing the Williams boyz on the DL, you should be blitzing more because you aren’t going to get as much pressure on them with your basic 3 or 4 guys. Also, if you wanna pull that fake shit with the showing them blitz and then backing off, you kind of need to send the house a few times to make sure the fake out works.  The Bills had 1 sack and zero QB hits on a QB who was sacked the 2nd most times heading into this game. Jerry Hughes played like crap and when he plays like crap, he starts doing dumb things like getting stupid penalties. When you can’t get pressure on the QB, your CBs start to struggle and I think you saw that since Darby/Gilmore had probably their worst day on the year.

—I’m still waiting for that IK guy to make a play that didn’t involve breaking Geno Smith’s jaw. This team has zero depth at DE/OLB/LB.

—Who the fuck is Spencer Ware?

—Bills are 0-3 against the Chiefs in their last 3 meetings and have out gained the Chiefs 1,249 yards to 901 yards, but have lost the turnover battle 8 to 1. The Bills have also lead at halftime in all three of these games. Woof.

—LeSean McCoy has averaged just 3.9 YPC over his last 2 weeks. He’s been hit at times with getting over 5YPC in 4 games, but has gone below 4YPC in the other 4 games. Still, he’s doing his job in terms of getting all-purpose yardage. This is his 4th game in a row where he’s gone over the century mark in rushing/receiving.

—The 160 yards the Bills gave up to Maclin was the 7th most they have given up to a WR since 2000 and the most they’ve given up since Torrey Smith in 2013 with the Ravens.

Final word:  I don’t want to stick a fork in the Bills yet, but it doesn’t looking good. I keep thinking 10 wins can get you in the playoffs, but that would mean running the table and since the Bills seem to always let us down, I’m not counting on it. Time to come to the realization that they are slightly below mediocrity
