Are we ever going to find out who our starting QB is for the opener?
I’m a little shocked that we are heading into game 3 of the preseason and we aren’t sure who is going to be the starting signal caller against the Colts. I assumed we would have known by now since the 3rd preseason game is the dress rehearsal for the regular season and you probably want your starter to have a ton of reps in that game. Instead, we have zero idea who the guy will be or whether this will be the final audition for them. At this point, we may have the QBs compete against each other when the Bills face the Colts. Alright..I’m joking…or am I?
Anyways, I’ve decided to kind of figure out why I would or wouldn’t want any of these guys as our starters. For the record: I hate all the QBs we have. I’m probably pro-EJ but that’s like voting for Donald Trump as president because he’s going against Russ Brandon. Maybe I’ll change my mind when I see the guys play in the regular season, but I refuse to base any decision on fake games. So when I’m indecisive, its best to just lay out the pros and cons.
Pro-Rex’s guy
I can’t remember anyone who has been on a bigger honeymoon than Rex Ryan. Everyone believes in the guy right now. If he brought back JP Losman as the starter, I think the entire fan base would love the move because Rex believes in him. Rex could alternate QBs by series against the Colts and it would be cutting edge. Rex could have Ronda Rousey at QB and it would be all good because she’s a bully and we are in the process of building one. Everyone is buying into everything he says. From the looks of it, Rex wants Tyrod. He’s been fixated on him dating back to his days with the Jets. I tend to believe defensive HC coaches like QBs who are mobile because it adds a dimension to the offense. Look at Ryan’s past two QBs: Geno Smith and Mike Vick. Both mobile guys. Make no mistake, Rex is running this franchise. I think the jettison of the popularity of Tyrod is based on Rex. I even think some lamestreamers who were taking dumps on the QBs before the first preseason game, decided to make him out to be the “sexy” option because they are either shilling for Rex or they wanna be right with predicting it being Tyrod’s job.
Con-Rex doesn’t know dick about offense
Mark Sanchez? Geno Smith? Tim Tebow? The Jets finished 31st, 22nd, 21st, 30th, 31st and 32nd in passing yards. Yes, we can blame the QBs or the brilliant idea to have Tony Sprano call offensive plays when he never did that before, but the bottom line is that Rex hasn’t helped any situation. So, what the fuck does he really know about QBs? Oh, I know…HE JUMPED OUT OF PLANES AND HAS A PICK-UP TRUCK THAT A BILLS MAFIA MEATHEAD WOULD HAVE!
Pro- Tyrod is the unknown and we know what that means…
Hope. What can’t kill you makes you stronger and because we don’t know if Tyrod Taylor can kill the Bills, we are a stronger fan base. That’s really why I feel Tyrod is getting a lot of love. We’ve seen so many QBs fall on their faces here that having a fresh start is much more refreshing than having a guy who may be more talented, but we’ve seen struggle. Anyone who tries telling me they were impressed with Tyrod scoring 3 points against the Browns as being the reason why he should win this job is Looney Tunes. You want him to win by default because you’ve seen the other suck balls at the NFL level.
Con-180
No…180 doesn’t mean I’m changing my mind, but it represents the number where Tyrod was selected in the 2011 draft. The 180th selection in 2011 was the 11th QB selected. TJ Yates and some asshole named Nathan Enderle were selected before Tyrod. Seriously, did anyone ever hear of Tyrod Taylor before the Bills signed him? Unless you are a VT or Ravens fan in your spare time, I call bullocks on anyone who says yes. Aside from Tony Romo and Tom Brady, the success rate of guys drafted this low is pretty fricken low. Look, I’m all for our QBs being average in order for us to succeed, but when you are drafted that low, you are probably below average. Go check out the list of QBs and who were selected in the 6th round. The guys there are either terrible, in the CFL, working at Geico or battling for the fucking starting job in Buffalo!
Pro-Fits Roman offense?
I’ve had a few fans and even friends try and draw comparisons to Kaepernick and Russel Wilson in regards to Tyrod. That’s fucking stupid. Just because all 3 guys are mobile and African Americans doesn’t mean they resemble each other. However, I would probably be stupid to not look at some correlations. We all know Kaep can run and throw. Kaep still passed for over 3,000 yards and rushed for over 500 yards the past two seasons. I think Tyrod being as fast as he is can approach the 5oo yards rushing mark, but when it comes to 3,000 yards passing? I don’t know. That seems like a tall order to ask. Still, he’s mobile and probably the best QB to run the read option or roll outs that Roman likes to call plays for.
Pro-He was decent in college
I don’t know if this is the best reason, but just check out Tyrod’s stats at VT.

Tyrod was 5th and 7th in the NCAA in 2009 and 2010 in YPA and won ACC offensive player of the year in 2010. If you need a write up, check out this Q&A we did with a VT blogger about him. To be honest, I’m kind of surprised more lamestreamers aren’t trying to dig up footage or talk to VT reporters about his play in college than basing it on training camp.
Final word:
I was wrong with downplaying the chances that Tyrod had a legit shot at getting the job heading into training camp. I thought he was no different than Brian Brohm and he was just another camp arm. However, the Bills are giving him a chance to win this job and Rex seems to be smitten by him. However, just because I didn’t take him seriously in terms of winning the job doesn’t mean I should take him seriously as a player. He’s been alright in the two exhibition games, but that’s just that…exhibition games.
While I’m quite ambivelant about who should be the starter, I wouldn’t despise Tyrod getting the nod, especially since I despise Matt Cassel even more. As of today, I still think its a 2-man race between Tyrod and Cassel. And even if Cassel wins, I could see Tyrod getting some spot duty in games since Roman did that a few times with Kaep during his 2nd year when Alex Smith was the starter. Tyrod has probably come the longest way since we had a vision of what 3 guys would be competing for the job. He’s near the finish line and he has Rex in his corner. At this point, I think it’s his job to lose.
