Let’s pretend you had a time machine and an unlimited budget…what baseball games would you go to? Tough question, right?!?
Here’s my list.
10 – Phillies vs. Cubs – May 17, 1979
Dubbed one of the “wildest games in modern history”, this mid-May contest holds the record for the most runs scored in one game, so if you’re a fan of high scoring contests…this isn’t the game for you. All told, eleven home runs were hit, including three by Dave Kingman and two by Mike Schmidt, who would hit the game-winner off fellow future-Hall of Famer Bruce Sutter.
9 – Dodgers vs. Yankees – October 18, 1977
Looking to close out the Dodgers, Reggie Jackson put the Yankees on his back and carried them to a World Series victory. With three home runs in three-straight at bats (and on three-straight pitches, no less), “Mr. October” earned his spot on any and all “top whatever” lists with this iconic performance.
8 – Red Sox vs. Mariners – April 29, 1986
Say what you want about Roger Clemens…dude could pitch. And when he was on, no one could hit him. Such was the case when he took the mound against the Mariners for his fourth start of the young 1986 season. How special is 20 strikeouts in a game? So special it’s only been done four times…and “Rocket” has done it twice.
7 – Marlins vs. Cubs – October 14, 2003
Forever dubbed “”The Bartman Game”, this NLCS Game Six contest is special (depending on who you ask) because it saw the Cubs, four outs away from going to the World Series, completely fall apart after an overzealous fan did exactly what all of us would have done. The aftermath was horrific and the treatment of Steve Bartmen unconscionable.
6 – Angels vs. Orioles – September 6, 1995
Fill in the blank. Whatever is an American as ________ and apple pie. Answer “baseball” and you’re spot on. Say “Cal Ripken Jr.” and you’re not likely to get an argument. When “The Iron Man” took the field against the Angels, he solidified himself as the working man’s working man…having played in a then-record 2131-straight games. For good measure, he’d play in 500 more just to make sure his record was out of reach.
5 – Mariners vs. Red Sox – May 10, 1999
Spoiler alert. May 10 is my birthday and Nomar Garciaparra is one of my all-time favorite players. So, yeah, I’d love to go back in time and spend my birthday at Fenway Park watching the former Red Sox shortstop belt three homers and knock in ten runs.
4 – Royals vs. Yankees – July 24, 1983
One of my earliest, most vivid memories as a baseball fan involved another one of my all-time favorite players…George Brett. To call 1983’s “Pine Tar Incident” one of baseball’s craziest moments would be an understatement.
3 – Tigers vs. White Sox – July 12, 1979
If you’re wondering why a mid-July doubleheader between a pair of fifth place teams is on this list, it’s because of these words…Disco Demolition. ‘nuff said.
2 – Red Sox vs. Mets – October 25, 1986
The Boston Red Sox were a few outs away from winning their first World Series since 1918 when the unthinkable happened. Yup, a slow roller up the first base line squirted through Bill Buckner’s legs and with that, a different kind of history was made.
1 – “Four Days in October” – October 17-20, 2004
While the World Series slipped through the Red Sox grasp in 1986, they would get another shot in 2003. Unfortunately, the Yankees put their foot down and ended that dream. A year later, the red Sox would get their revenge and those four days in October were awesome.
