On Saturday night the Red Sox struggling pitcher Felix Doubront was taking on the Yankees struggling pitcher Phil Hughes. It would be a question of which pitcher would struggle more and which pitcher would get the job done. Felix had a rough inning or two to start the game, but came out of it unscathed unlike Phil Hughes who had another imploding outing on the mound.
Doubront has continued to make steps forward in each outing he has had since April and this outing would be the same. Doubront seemed to have issues with pitch location in the first two innings, but was able to get the third out he needed each time to not have any damage done. Doubront also got the benefit of his team getting him an early lead. In the 3rd inning, the Sox bats got all over Phil Hughes. The Sox got their first run with an RBI double from Mike Carp. With one out and runners at 2nd and 3rd, the Yankees decided to intentionally walk David Ortiz. I understand the theory behind it, but that theory did not work out too well for them. Napoli came up to the plate with the bases loaded and knocked the ball out of the park for a GRAND SLAM. Sox 5-0. The Yankees were able to get their only run of the night in the 4th inning when Stewart hit a sac fly RBI to plate Nix. Sox 5-1. Doubront was really in control from the 3rd inning on and had himself a nice outing. Doubront's pitching line for the night was 103 pitches, 6 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 3 BB and 6 Ks.
Tazawa came out in relief in the 7th inning and had himself a nice 1-2-3 inning. In the 8th inning the Sox bats got all over Yankee reliever Adam Warren and totally put this game away. It was done by surprising people as well. Iglesias and Jackie Bradley Jr both singled and then Nava hit a 3 run HR to have the Sox leading 8-1. This was Nava's 8th HR of the season. He has continued to get the job done and been productive both starting and off the bench for the team. In the 9th inning, the Sox continued to pummel Warren. Stephen Drew hit a solo HR, Iggy hit an RBI single and then Nava hit an RBI groundout. Sox 11-1. That'll do. Koji Uehara came out and had himself a nice 1-2-3 inning to get the Sox win in the books. High Five!
The Red Sox are back to leading the AL East by 2 games, so no matter what happens tomorrow night they will leave the Bronx on top of the standings. Love That Dirty Water!
