The Sox and Yanks faced off last night in the rubber game of the series. The game was Ryan Dempster vs. CC Sabathia, however the game would seesaw back and forth and end up being decided in extra innings with a Red Sox walk off homerun.
Dempster struggled out of the gate in this game by giving up 2 runs in the first inning. Gardner scored the Yankees first run on a throwing error by Saltalamacchia and then Ichiro scored on an RBI single from Vernon Wells. Sox 0-2. The Sox went to 0-3 in the 2nd when Dempster gave up an RBI single to Cano. Sox 0-3. At this point the game wasn't looking good for the Sox, however the offense would finally get going in the 3rd inning. The Sox scored their first run when Pedroia hit an RBI single to score Ellsbury. Sox 1-3. The Sox then took the lead in the inning when Mike Napoli hit a 3 run HR. Sox 4-3. In the 4th the Sox added on two more runs when Victorino hit an RBI single to score Drew and Iglesias. Sox 6-3. In the 5th the Sox added on another run when Gomes hit a leadoff HR. Sox 7-3.
The Sox seemed in complete control of this game, which of course meant it was the Yankees time to make a run at the scoreboard. In the 6th inning Dempster gave up an RBI single to Gardner and was done for the night. Craig Breslow was in the game and closed the book on Dempster's night by giving up an RBI single to Cano. Sox 7-5. In the 7th Breslow took the mound again, but would get replaced with 2 batters on and one out. Tazawa was in the game and by the end of the inning the game would be tied. Tazawa gave up a single and a run ended up scoring by way of a throwing error from Iglesias at third base. Sox 7-6. Then the Yankees tied the game when Cruz hit an RBI sac groundout. Sox 7-7. Matt Thornton took the mound in the 8th and for the first time in a Red Sox uniform had himself a scoreless inning. The Sox had the bases loaded in the 8th inning with only one out, but they were unable to score when Napoli hit into an inning ending double play.
Koji Uehara pitched a scoreless inning in the 9th and we were on to extra innings. Drake Britton came on in the 10th and while he gave the Yankees a chance to win, the inning ended with Overbay hitting into a double play. Pedro Beato continued the trend of the bullpen and pitched a scoreless 11th inning. In the bottom of the 11th inning and with only one pitcher left in the Sox bullpen, the bats finally got a run across the board. Pedey flied out and then Papi grounded out, however Mike Napoli would be the hero of the night when he hit his 2nd HR of the game to have the Sox walk off with the win at 1am.
