National Signing Day: Four-star safety Andrew Pryts flips to Stanford

Penn State took a hit on the recruiting trail at the very last minute today. Four-star safety Andrew Pryts, who had been committed to the Nittany Lions since August, announced this morning he is instead signing with Stanford.

Pryts was to be Penn State’s lone safety in the Class of 2016, although Penn State returns three redshirt freshmen to keep the depth in decent order. Losing a four-star player on signing day is a tough pill to swallow though and will surely support the idea James Franklin is losing some steam. Greg Pickel of PennLive.com notes Pryts had long been considering Stanford up to the time he committed to Penn State. Pryts made a visit to Stanford in January.

The late loss in the recruiting process is a reality of programs trying to compete on the top level, but Penn State needs to get to a point where losing one four-star player is not seen as a devastating blow on signing day. Perhaps that day will come, but for now it is a blow to the move to add quality depth on the team.
