The Phillies lost to the Nationals again tonight, and will try to win tomorrow to avoid getting swept.
In the 2nd inning, Darin Ruf hit a 2 run home run to give the Phillies a 2-0 lead. Later that inning, Cliff Lee hit a sacrifice fly, so then the Phillies were up 3-0. Well even later that inning, Jimmy Rollins hit a single to give the Phillies a 4-0 lead. With Cliff Lee on the mound for the Phillies, that should be more than enough run support.
In the 4th inning the Nationals started to chip away at the Phillies lead, scoring 2 runs on a Jayson Werth RBI single and an Adam Laroche RBI ground-out. The Phillies were then up 4-2. Two innings later, Wilson Ramos hit an RBI single, and then it was only a 1 run Phillies lead. In the very next inning, Bryce Harper hit an RBI bunt, to tie the game. The Phillies blew a 4 run lead. Later that inning, Jayson Werth demolished a 355 foot home run to left field. The Nationals were then up 6-4. The Nationals scored two more runs that inning on an Anthony Rendon single, and the Nationals were then up by 4 runs. In the top of the 8th Dom Brown hit a solo homer to pull the Phils within 3 runs. There was no more scoring in this game and the Nationals won 8-5.
Cliff Lee did not do bad for the Phillies, he gave up 3 earned runs in 6 innings, could he be returning to his early-season self? Maybe. We can only hope. Nationals starter Taylor Jordan did poorly, giving up 4 earned runs in 5 innings. He gave up 8 base-runners in 5 innings, terrible. While Cliff Lee did good, the bullpen did not. The bullpen gave up 5 earned runs in 2 innings. Absolute terrible. This bullpen loses the Phillies yet another game! With the loss of Bastardo, other bullpen guys are going to need to step up and start to pitch well, but tonight they didn’t.
Tomorrow, the Phillies will play the Nats once more, and try to avoid getting swept.
