Kings’ Speech: Game 5 vs. Detroit Pistons

Tonight, the Sacramento Kings look to add more misery to the Detroit Pistons’ rocky start to the new NBA season.  The Pistons are in the midst of a six-game road trip and have yet to win this year.

Detroit arrives in Sacramento after falling in the Mile High City to the Denver Nuggets last night. Kings veteran Chuck Hayes knows that the mid-week contest is a winnable game for the Kings considering the Pistons are playing their second game in as many nights.

Speaking from experience, most teams whenever they come to Sacramento, they want to hurry up and get out. So if we can hurry up and put the pedal to the metal and jump on them early and create a cushion – a big lead where they have to play uphill the whole game – we should be able to win this game.

The Pistons are a team desperate to get off the snide and rack up their first win of the season. However, the Kings’ focus should be on what they can control rather than what Detroit might do according to head coach Keith Smart.

Duplicating what you’re doing well and focus on what you’re not. That’s our job as coaches to present that to them what they’re not doing well. If they keep duplicating, and they’ve done it so far with how hard they’ve been playing defensively, working on spacing and making sure that it’s taken care of on the floor, moving the ball when you have to.

All eyes will be on the match-up at center. Since being drafted by their respective franchises in 2010, DeMarcus Cousins and Greg Monroe have often been compared to one another early in their careers. The Kings big man has a lot of respect for Monroe and is aware the Pistons center is capable of having a big game on any given night.

I know Greg and I know he’s a tough match-up.  He plays hard. He never stop playing, so that’s somebody I keep my eye on. He can come out one night and give you 14 and 10 or explode one night and give you 30 and 12. He’s pretty similar to myself, so he’s definitely somebody I keep my eye on.
