Durant is leaving agent Rob Pelinka to join the likes of Robinson Cano and Victor Cruz, among other athletes, with Jay-Z's sports agency |
Much was made of the news from a few months ago that part-owner of the Nets, and massive rap mogul and businessman , Jay-Z, would have to sell his small stake in the team as he transitioned his focus in the NBA from being an owner to being an agent. But now, to the surprise of no one that is familiar with the wild success anything Jay-Z's involved in experiences, Roc Nation Sports, the name of his agency, is picked up new and high-profile clients in the sports world seemingly left and right.
He started with Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano and New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz and then added WNBA star Skylar Diggins and Jets rookie quarterback Geno Smith. And now, he's caught his biggest fish yet: Oklahoma City Thunder superstar Kevin Durant.
A consensus top-five player in the whole NBA, Durant is just 24 years old with a ton of lucrative and successful career left, making the signing an enormous coup for Jay-Z's fledgling but on-its-way agency and further cementing his shift away from dealing with the Nets exclusively. Bad news for Brooklyn, bad news for other top agents, but good news for Beyonce's famous husband.
I'll admit, the reign of Jay-Z as a big player with the Nets was short but fun and exciting. We'll always have him to thank for the team's incredibly awesome re-branding effort as it moved from New Jersey to Brooklyn in the Big Apple.
